Harper Government Invests in Sport and Recreation

Yesterday, the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport), and Senator Larry Smith announced funding of $5 million over the next two years to support injury prevention in sports and recreation among children and youth.

The Government of Canada is acting on a strategy to prevent major injuries (concussions, drowning and fractures) occuring in young people involved in amateur sport. This new investment will promote the safety of children and youth in high-participation activities such as hockey, snow sports, cycling and water sports.

Teaching Materials

If you want to share a good article with your students about a story of a young hockey player who suffers a concussion, click here. This article is also a good resource for teacher's - it provides good rationale for double-checking on a student if they are hit hard during a game or physical education class.  Sometimes students don't always disclose how they are really feeling.

If you are looking for teaching resources to use with your students regarding injury prevention, check out the Think First website - much of the material is geared towards the elementary grades but some of it could be adapted for secondary.
